Mothering Sunday (Mother’s day)

Mothering Sunday Traditions (AKA Mother’s Day)
Mothering Sunday is the fourth Sunday of Lent, this year Sunday 11th March 2018.
Here at the Gordon Arms we are now taking bookings for Sunday Lunch between noon and 2pm if you would like to treat your Mum to a home-cooked roast.
Mothering Sunday is steeped in history with its humble beginnings dating back to when people would visit their ‘Mother church’. In Victorian times employees would be given leave to visit their families and attend church.
The once religious celebration has now become somewhat over commercialised and frequently referred to by the American term ‘Mother’s Day’.
Simnel cake is also a tradition of Mothering Sunday – a rich fruit and marzipan cake, seen as a treat during the austere period of Lent.
